For my years of loyal service – Forget Me Not

Its an unfortunate fact that very few people want senior horses and this presents a problem which we would like to be able to go some way to alleviate.

In  2021 case two senior horses who had been loved and cared for by their  owner for many years were left in a precarious situation. Sadly the owner developed dementia and was taken into medical residential care, with no other family left to care for the horses. In the interim the equally elderly neighbours did their utmost with the care of the horses but were struggling.

With the sale of the owners home there was no money left  for the care of the horses so their situation was dire and they faced euthanasia for the only reason that they were aged.

Had they been young and fit then its likely homes could have been found but 1 is almost totally blind and the other is her eyes and very attached, taking his job very seriously.

Both horses are now in the care of Forget Me Not and are guaranteed a secure and permanent home for the rest of their days.

Luna (age is a little obscure but we think over 25)

Luna came to the Sanctuary as one of a duo, and she is the sweetest girl! Her eyesight has completely gone in one eye and two thirds gone in the other, which means she has a few special needs. We named her Luna as her blind eye resembles the moon – it’s beautiful. We make sure we talk and make happy noises around her so she can locate us easily, and we love to watch her ‘see’ us with her ears. She loves a good grooming session and cuddles, has impeccable manners and is very much a lady of leisure.

Frank - 25 +

Frank arrived with Luna and he has one job to do – be her guardian! He will not be separated from his lady, even if she doesn’t mind, and he stands over her as her protector while she snoozes under the trees.

He takes his job very seriously, but will happily come over for a cuddle and a chat, getting particular enjoyment from a neck scratch.

He’s a lovely fellow with a heart of gold, a cute velvety muzzle and the chivalrous soul of a knight.

Spirit 31 Years

Spirit is a gentleman who knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to ask! He came from the worst of circumstances and is happily soaking up all the love, food and freedom he can get. He adores a cuddle, lines himself up so any itchy spots are easily within reach of our hands, and makes awful faces at anyone who tries to get between him and his dinner. Spirit has lived up to his name, showing us just how forgiving these magnificent animals are, and he is an integral part of the Sanctuary. His story is available here - Blog - , but be warned, even though he has a happy ending, it is still heartbreaking.

Sponsor Basil

Basil Aged 24

Basil can be a little shy around new people and horses, but once he gets to know you, it can be quite difficult to deter him from trying to climb into your lap for a snuggle. He is a favourite in the herd, with the other horses knowing he is the go-to guy for nuzzles, comfort and a good dose of wisdom. Basil follows us everywhere, asks a lot of questions about what we’re doing and why, and is a sweet, kind teddy bear with hooves.

Sponsor Shere Khan

Shere Khan Aged 30

Shere Khan is an independent soul, enjoying all the horsey things: food, the company of other horses, mutual grooming and dozing under the trees. He is nearly blind in one eye, but that doesn’t slow him down in the least and his radar ears keep him informed of all the goings on. He is a hilariously messy eater, throwing his food over his shoulder and onto his back, which makes the birds very happy, but he is extremely polite in every other way.

Sponsor Cracker

Cracker Aged 33

Cracker is the boss, if you don’t mind and thank you very much! He has trained his herd-mates so that he only has to flick an ear and they will do his bidding. He was a multi-championship winning stockhorse, and his retirement has not stopped him from maintaining his disciplined lifestyle. Cracker has a secret though – when nobody is looking, he is an incorrigible smooch! He adores a clandestine cuddle and is more of a softie than he likes to let on. Just don’t tell anyone.
